Once upon a time there was a guy who had a product idea. He pursued that product idea night and day, month in and month out. He worked long and hard on this product idea and finally, he actually built it.
He was so proud of his newly born product. He thought it was the most wonderful thing he had ever seen. It was perfect. It solved all of his problems almost instantly.
He told his family about it and they were all quite impressed with his passion and excitement. He would bring his product out and show it off. He would demonstrate it. He would tell everyone in his family that they needed to have one too. In fact, he wanted to have his family tell their friend’s because he was sure everybody would see what he saw.
Well much to his dismay his family didn’t want one of his great new products. He figured that if he just told them a little more about how great it was they would want one. Nope.
“It must be that they don’t understand how passionate I am about my new creation.” he thought. So he cornered them every time he was them.
“Why won’t my family return my calls?” the brilliant inventor thought to himself. No longer invited to family functions was hard, but he got used to it.
“I know”, the clever inventor thought, “My friends appreciate me more than my family. After all, you can choose your friends, but not your family.”
So the plucky inventor started showing off his great new product to all his friends. “These people are just like me so I know they will see the value of what I have discovered!” he thought to himself with pride.
Soon, after getting used to leaving lots and lots of voicemails and getting no body returning his calls anymore, the inventor was about to give up on his great new discovery. That’s when he met the most clever man in the world.
“You look like you just lost your best friend.” this clever man said to the sad inventor.
“Not one, all of them.” he replied in a low and frustrated tone. “And my family doesn’t talk to me much either.” he added with a Huurrumph.
After listening to the sad inventor the very clever man made some suggestions. The inventor put those suggestions into action an very soon the inventor wasn’t sad anymore! In fact, he had found a way to find thousands and thousands of people who needed what he had discovered and showed him great appreciation for sharing it with them.
What the very clever man told the inventor was:
Don’t hunt people, make them hunt you. There is a very hungry stream of people looking for what you have.
Get in FRONT of that stream. Instead of trying to carry buckets of water (finding customers) get in their line of sight. Find out where they are looking and be there.
Tell them what their problem is. Most people feel the pain and know they need a solution, but they really can’t define their problem. Help them define their problem.
Tell them that you’ve had that problem too. They will be able to see you as someone who understands and has solved the problem before.
Show them how they will benefit from your solution. Don’t tell them how great the product is or all about the bells and whistles. Since you know their problem help them see how their life will be better by having what you offer.
Tell them what to do. People know they have a need but don’t know what to do. Tell them exactly what to do. “Click here now”, “Go to this site”, “Put your name and email in that little box”, “Buy my stuff”
The rich and happy inventor listened to the very clever man (which was the real secret, having a mentor to help you grow really fast) and not only had thousands of people buying his discovery, he had people under him enlisting hundreds of other people enlisting hundreds of others to all buy his stuff.
